MY SMOOTH TRANSITION INTO THE DUTCH WORKING CLIMATE

A Blog post by Zahier Kajee

WHO AM I?
My name is Zahier Kajee and I am amongst other titles a data warehouse architect for LeadingMile Consultancy for just over a year now. Within this timeframe I’ve had many memorable experiences, both with our internationally seasoned clients, as well as within our internal organisation. Making the leap of moving to a new country is exciting and doing this with my family has made it all worthwhile, let’s unpack some of these exciting insights experienced during my initial transition to The Netherlands.

MY JOURNEY

After I started at LeadingMile, I needed some time to acclimatise to my new work- and personal environmentAfter being in my new position for a short period of time,I was accepted intomy current client, a top 10 international banking organization as a Solutions Architect for a data warehouse and reporting division. This boosted my motivation greatly and to me served as a testament which proved I made the right decision by making the leap of moving to The Netherlands.

Everything I learnt in my previous years of experience would definitely come in handy, moving forward and embracing new ways of working with familiar undertones gives me the feeling of being comfortable with the uncomfortable. So challenge accepted, new company, new people, new systems, new ways of working and a new journey to innovate with data.

THE FIRST STEPS IN MY NEW ENVIRONMENT

In the first period of our engagement, things got overwhelming at times, but I steadily kept at it because on one hand, I knew that I had done this before; working in a new environment but still creating new, innovative ways of delivering data.

This combined with bringing in new technology stacks and working alongside many teams helped realize the journey that was ahead of me. To add to my personal experience I had the full support of the LeadingMile team who are proactively assisting its consultants, especially in the first period of my employment. These factors rapidly made me realise that this is an ideal environment for me as a dedicated Data professional.

MY PERSONAL WORKING STYLE

I’ve always been the person to have a physical one-on-one meeting to better understand people in order to create good long-lasting relationships. The future has not changed, and successful networking is highly dependent on how well you’ll embrace technology to network and create relationships virtually from anywhere in the world.

have considered myself a data virtuoso merely because of my vast experience in the IT/IS world. This led me to be quite comfortable in leading companies to develop good data story telling capabilities, taking into consideration I was always in my native country. In the present day, I am no longer in my native country. The language is foreign but familiar, the systems are different, however I still feel au courant about it all.

These factors made things a bit challenging in the beginning. Nevertheless I’ve managed to embrace it all. I’ve familiarized myself with the systems and allowed myself to be immersed into the world of data automation to better add value to our clients as well as our internal organization.

WHAT LIES AHEAD

The foundation has been laid for the future by learnings from my past and embracing new ways of working as well. Through my work at LeadingMile I am able to constantly learn and use the latest state-of-the-art tooling and technology and I look forward to continuing this cycle of growth. FurthermoreI am truly excited about what the future holds for me and my family in our new environment.
